There are several different types of contact lenses available, and it’s important to find the right ones for you. This will depend on your prescription, lifestyle and personal preferences. When you have your contact lens consultation, your optometrist will discuss all the different types of lenses suitable for your prescription and help you choose the best type for your individual needs.
Daily disposable lenses
These are wearable once, then you need to dispose of them. They’re convenient and great if you only wear lenses occasionally or lead a busy lifestyle as there’s no need to worry about solutions or storage. People with sensitive eyes sometimes prefer dailies, as there is less chance of contamination, and they are very thin and comfortable to wear.
2 weekly disposable lenses
Fortnightly lenses require lens care and are designed to be worn for up to 2 weeks. You’ll need to remove them at the end of the day and clean and store them correctly overnight. Once you get used to the routine, it’s easy and lots of people find these lenses to be a good compromise between convenience and cost.
Monthly disposable lenses
Monthlies can be worn daily for a month and are often the lens of choice for people who wear them every day. Like the 2 weeklies, they need to be looked after properly, but when you only need 12 pairs a year it can be worth it for cost-effectiveness.
Multifocal disposable lenses
If you have presbyopia and need multifocal glasses, you can still wear contact lenses as multifocals are available in daily and extended-wear disposable lenses. Enjoy clarity of vision at near, middle and far distances with the convenience of contacts.
Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses
Designed to be worn daily, RGP lenses are made from a special plastic that allows oxygen to the eye. They are well suited to people with severe astigmatism or keratoconus. While they take some time to get used to, some people find RGP lenses more comfortable than disposables.
